This is an original vintage "Stubai Aschenbrenner Ges. Gesch" (all engraved on the head). The axe is very good condition and shows signs of normal wear. The leather head protector is torn a bit at the tip (see photo). Their is also one of the previous owners name carved on one side. This particular ice axe was bought at the famous Schuster Sport Shop in Munich, Germany.

More details

Schuster Sport started to sell mountaineering equipment in 1913 and later developed their own ski binding; the ASMU (August Schuster Munich). The ASMU trademark later became an international brand name for mountaineering equipment. This trademark is also engraved on the reverse side of the head with "Schuster Sport/Munchen".

For some history, Peter Aschenbrenner was an Austrian Mountain Guide (1902-1998) who was invilved in the early expeditions to climb Nanga Parbat in the Himalyas. He developed an ice axe in the early 1930's and got the Stubai company to manufacture it for him. These axes became almost universal in the mountains from the mid 1930's right up to the 1960's when fibre-glass, metal and alloy shafted tools began to take over. There were many variations, some of which appear to have been custom made. Batches were made for German and Swiss mountain troops during WWII.
